Parent of Newly Diagnosed Child

TEN THINGS TO DO FIRST - #1 Connect with Support Systems.

With an incidence rate of 1 in 100, we can promise you that you are not alone! There are many families living with autism at all points on the spectrum and with children of all ages (as well as adults!). The most important thing that you can do is to find others in your community who are dealing with similar issues. With them you can kvetch and commiserate as well as share resources, knowledge, tears and laughter. Check out our support group listings to find a group near you.

Enlist your family. We know that sometimes families are difficult, but many times they are our best supports. As you learn more about autism and your child, teach your parents, siblings, and extended family. Are you a member of a church, synagogue or mosque? Faith communities are a great source of support, emotionally, spiritually and practically. Reach out to your neighbors and community. There is no shame or stigma in having a child with autism. Share your needs with your community, there are many who are willing and eager to help, give them the chance. Need help teaching your community about autism? Call us and we can schedule an “Autism Orientation” workshop in your area.

More of an online person? Join an online support group, find list serves and other online resources for connecting with other parents here in Connecticut and around the country (and the world) living with autism.
