Parent of Newly Diagnosed Child

TEN THINGS TO DO FIRST - #4 Learn Your Legal Rights

As parent of a child with a disability, you may be entitled to services from various state and federal programs. If your child is not yet three years old, contact Birth to Three to obtain services. If your child is over the age of three, contact your local school system. Issues around eligibility for state programs through the Department of Developmental Services, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Children and Family Services change constantly so you will need to contact these agencies and check on your eligibility. Again, ASK QUESTIONS. Other families and the advocacy organizations around the state will be invaluable to you as you start to learn the ropes of navigating these systems. Call or e-mail (info@asconn.org) us, we can help! The Federal Government can help, too, check out eligibility for social security disability (SSI) as well as other programs.

Your insurance company may be required to pay for certain services as well. Check your policy, call your carrier and if you have any questions call us or call the Office of the Healthcare Advocate to get answers.
