Parent of Newly Diagnosed Child
TEN THINGS TO DO FIRST - #5 Get Organized
For many of us, this is a difficult matter, but you will find that a little organization will go a long way! There will be lots of reports, tests and paperwork, not to mention follow up on phone calls and letters. Devise a system for filing copies of all reports on your child (three ring binders are very popular!). Create a system for tracking your phone calls to various state agencies and for follow up. Keep copies of all records and paperwork from your child’s school related to his or her special education. You will find that over the years you will return to many of these documents again and again. Many of us have entire bookshelves devoted to binders with indexed paperwork.
An interesting idea is to video tape your child over the years to document progress. With new technology and digital video cameras (not to mention video capable phones!), this is even easier to do than ever. Being able to look back and see the progress your child has made will be a wonderful experience. Asking your speech or occupational therapist if you can video a session may also give you some ideas for how to work with your child at home as well.
