Parent of Newly Diagnosed Child
TEN THINGS TO DO FIRST - #3 Understand the Diagnosis
Getting an autism diagnosis may seem like the end of a long journey, but it is actually the beginning of a new one. There is a lot to learn. You will need to understand autism generally and more importantly, how autism manifests itself in your child. You will need to learn about the special education system and the social services system. You may need to learn about the legal system and most certainly about estate planning and future planning for your child’s life as an adult. As your child grows and changes (and we can promise, like all children, children with autism grow up!) you will need to learn new and different things. Take it slowly and take it step by step. Read books, attend seminars, workshops and other programs, talk with other parents, attend conferences, surf the web. Start with our resources section.
