Assistive and Alternative Technology

There are many different types of assistive and alternative technologies that can be used to help teach a child with autism. They are not interventions themselves, but rather strategies or teaching tools that can be used across interventions.

Assistive Technology (AT) includes both the devices and the services. An AT device could be a toy, a computer, an iTouch, specialized pencils, mobility devices, specialized software programs, etc. AT services include the assessment of a child’s needs, determining which type of device is most appropriate, and training in the use of the device or program for the child, parents and teachers.

Learn more about AT resources in Connecticut at the NEAT Marketplace and the Montano Center.
