PECS Therapy
PECS, the Picture Exchange Communication System is a specific program that utilizes pictures as a method of teaching communication skills to a non-verbal person. Developed by Pyramid Educational consultants, PECS is designed as a system that focuses on the initiation component of communication, an area of particular difficulty for many with ASD. PECS begins by teaching an individual to give a picture of a desired item to a “communication partner” who immediately honors the exchange as a request. The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences and in the more advanced phases, individuals are taught to answer questions and to comment.
